Michael Ignatieff Stands in Support of Wasteful Long Gun Registry

April 20, 2010 -- Ottawa, Ontario, -- Yesterday, the leader of the Liberal Party, Michael Ignatieff, once again expressed his support for the wasteful long-gun registry. In response, the Hon. Rob Moore, Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism, criticised Mr. Ignatieff's position.

"Mr. Ignatieff wants to continue wasting billions of dollars on a policy that punishes law-abiding hunters, farmers and target shooters - on a policy that fails to punish real criminals who simply do not register their guns," said Minister Moore.

"Instead of supporting failed policies like the long-gun registry, our Conservative government stands behind the wishes of communities and families across the country, who ask for accountability, support for victims and appropriate measures to punish dangerous offenders," Minister Moore added.

Although eight Liberal MPs voted for Conservative Member of Parliament Candice Hoeppner's Private Members Bill C-391 at its second reading, Michael Ignatieff's long-standing position continues to be steadfast against the bill. Mr. Ignatieff has now committed to whipping his Liberal MPs to also vote against the bill.

On November 4, 2009, at its second reading, Bill C-391 received unanimous support from the Conservative caucus. Its passage into law means that Canadians will no longer have to register non-restricted long-guns. The bill must still pass the committee stage, pass third reading in the House, pass in the Senate, and receive Royal Assent before it becomes law.

Rob Moore is the Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal and the Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism. He has been a vocal supporter of the abolition of the gun registry since his election in 2004.
