Accessible Apartments for Quispamsis Seniors Officially Open

April 30, 2010 - Quispamsis, New Brunswick - The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism was pleased to join Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John, today at the official opening of a new, 16-unit facility for low-income seniors in Quispamsis.

The 16 accessible apartments are part of a $1.8-million project at the Ken-Val United Church Suites. The units have been funded under Phase III of the Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Agreement.

The units were developed by Ken-Val United Church Suites Inc., a non-profit corporation. The project received $480,000 under the federal Housing Trust Fund to offset construction costs, as well as more than $1-million in rent supplements from the Province of New Brunswick.

"The Government of Canada is committed to giving a hand-up to low-income Canadians by making affordable housing available in New Brunswick and across Canada for those who need it most," said MP Weston. “This project will help seniors access safe and suitable housing, and build a stronger future for themselves."

Minister Moore attended with MP Weston, who was at the opening on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Ken-Val United Church Suites were built to high energy-efficiency standards, and the developers held consultations with Efficiency NB. Builders of affordable housing projects for low-income individuals may receive an incentive of $2,000 per apartment unit if the building is heated by low greenhouse-gas-emission technologies which meet the approval of Efficiency NB
