Government of Canada To Fund Black River Wharf Repairs

July 2, 2009 -- Black River, New Brunswick -- MP Rob Moore today announced that the Black River Wharf has been selected to receive funding through the federal Small Craft Harbour program.

"The fishing industry is an important part of the local economy in Black River," said Mr. Moore. "Our government's investment will strengthen the fishery and support the families and businesses that rely on it."

The Small Craft Harbours Program, introduced in Canada's Economic Action Plan, provides $200 million over two years to communities across Canada. This funding will accelerate harbour repair and maintenance as well as undertake dredging projects.

The projects enabled by this funding are undertaken in close collaboration with the harbour authorities that manage and operate the facilities.

The federal government's investment to Black River will support repairs and reconstruction to the local wharf. Tenders will soon be available and it is hoped a contract would be awarded in the coming months.

"Our government is committed to sustaining vital economic activity in small communities," added Mr. Moore. "This investment will create local jobs and improve the harbour facilities for local fishers."
