Fundy Trail Development Authority Secures Federal Funding for Educational Tourism Attraction

August 26, 2009 -- St. Martins, New Brunswick -- MP Rob Moore was in St. Martins today to announce funding for the opening of a new educational tourist attraction, which will be made possible thanks to investments from the federal government.

"In addition to increasing interest in the Fundy Trail Parkway and promoting tourism, the project will bring significant benefits to employment in the Village of St. Martins and the surrounding area," said MP Moore.

The investment will assist the Fundy Trail Development Authority acquire and manage a small scale, working saw mill. The saw mill, which once operated at Big Salmon River, was donated to the project. It will be reconstructed, allowing tourism operators to demonstrate the type of logging and forest harvesting techniques that were conducted by the area’s original settlers and by logging companies over the last 150 years. The attraction will also include exhibits featuring photographs, artifacts, and displays of items used in the forestry industry.

The Government of Canada is contributing $35,500 toward the project under the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF).

"Our government is working closely with the provinces and industry to deliver assistance to the tourism industry, in order to stimulate the economy and create jobs," added MP Moore.

Through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) program, the federal government is investing $1 billion over two years ($100.4 million in Atlantic Canada) to create jobs and maintain employment in communities affected by the current economic slowdown. The Atlantic portion of the CAF program is being delivered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

Organizations and individuals interested in learning more about how to apply for funding under the Community Adjustment Fund are encouraged to contact their local ACOA office. For more information regarding the CAF application process, please consult ACOA's website at: This Link
